Naturopathic Medicine recognises that health is not limited to physical aspects but includes mental, emotional, and spiritual health. The devastation of the pandemic Spanish Flu in 1918 resulted in more than 3 times as many deaths as those killed in WW1. All aspects of health of those people were likely to be low due to the trauma of war, grief, poor nutrition, and phenomenal changes in their lives at that time. Here I will focus on the physical aspects of health which can be helped naturally to boost immunity. The body needs to working efficiently in all aspects to effectively fight disease. This means that the diet best suited to your body is important. Water is the most essential nutrient, no excuses for avoiding this one, drink at least 2 litres of a day. Go organic to increase the nutrients in your foods and avoid unnecessary and damaging chemicals. Avoid sugars as much as possible. Sugars NATURALLY found in fruits and vegetables are OK. But take care not to overdo the dried fruit and avoid any sugar added to food anything ending ose is a sugar. Sugar will use up valuable nutrients you need for a strong immune system. Youre more likely to contract any disease if you have excess sugar in your diet. By stopping sugar you will have a better chance of not only avoiding Swine Flu, but also avoiding other big killers such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Include some form of protein with all meals i.e. Organic meat, fish eggs nuts (or vegetarian protein i.e. Homous, seeds with grains - sunflower or pumpkin seeds on rice or porridge). Good quality fats found in fish, nuts and extra virgin olive oil (used cold on food) are essential for an efficient immune system. Eat vegetables and fruit for vitamins and minerals that boost immunity. Important nutrients for the immune system are Zinc , Selenium, vitamins A C E and D, Enzyme CoQ10 and Beta glucans. Silver has been shown to help prevent and treat viral and bacterial infections. Herbal medicines have a long history of use with flu infections; Echinacea Golden Seal, Wild Indigo, Elderflower, St Johns Wort and Garlic.
Relaxation and sleep are age old remedies to ward off sickness and heal the body, during sleep the immune system works more efficiently. However, dont have a few drinks to help you to relax as alcohol uses up essential nutrients. Exercise is important to keep your immune system working well, get out every day. Hygiene is very important as is keeping warm now that we are entering winter.
