Metabolic Syndrome
Diagnosis Gives Motivation for Health

A diagnosis of the Metabolic Syndrome gives you a great opportunity to avoid serious disease and an early death. You may have this syndrome and not be aware of it; the Metabolic Syndrome is a way of describing a group of symptoms which show the metabolism is seriously affected; putting you at high risk or cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes.

Check if you have these symptoms of the Metabolic Syndrome: high blood pressure, high blood fats, high cholesterol, high blood sugar levels (not necessarily diabetic), and abdominal obesity (waist measurement more than 102 cm for men or 88 cm for women).

Naturopaths always treat people on an individual assessment of total heath needs; consequently people with the same diagnosis will have somewhat different treatment regimes. Scientific research now recommends slightly different diets to improve the metabolic syndrome according to the type of imbalances of cholesterol, blood fats and blood pressure.
However a high sugar diet, soft drinks, refined carbohydrates, and high alcohol consumption will cause problems for all people with the metabolic syndrome.
Poor quality fats exacerbate problems whereas monounsaturated fats found in extra virgin olive oil and oils high in omega 3 fats such as flaxseed oil help.

A number of nutrients such as Vitamin E, vitamin C, B vitamins, Magnesium and GTF Chromium also help.
The food state form of vitamin C has been shown to reduce blood fats and improve cholesterol when taken for at least a month.
Blood sugar imbalances in people with the metabolic syndrome are helped by supplements of magnesium, and may help prevent type 2 diabetes. Magnesium combined with lifestyle changes improves both blood sugar levels blood pressure.

GTF Chromium is important for carbohydrate metabolism; as a supplement it improves blood sugar levels.
