What Can Your Tongue Tell You About Your Health?

The tongue can reveal a great deal about your health. You can read here about how the tongue can show possible lack of essential mineral salts. But remember if using supplements these salts must be taken in low doses according to your individual needs.

So stick out your tongue and begin. Is it coated? A white coating can indicate a potassium chloride deficiency. Digestion can be under active, and nutrients may be poorly absorbed, so the body isn’ getting the best out of the food.

A creamy coating suggests over acidity, due both an unsuitable diet and stress. Sodium phosphate will help to redress this imbalance, as will relaxation. You may need to make changes in your diet to foods that suit you better. Definitely stop excess sugar and try including lentils, beans and dates.

A strawberry coloured tongue (red with small white spots) points to a lack of calcium phosphate, which is needed for bones, teeth and nail growth. Calcium phosphate may be low at any time of growth, including pregnancy. It may be low where there are menopausal or premenstrual problems. It is not only found in milk, but also in tofu and pulses such as chickpeas, nuts, and seeds, and of course green vegetables.

Teeth marks at the sides of the tongue reveal a problem with fluid balance in the body, where sodium sulphate may be needed. Sodium sulphate is protective of the liver, so will help if the liver is functioning poorly. Any foods in the onion family will help, e.g. garlic, leeks onions.

Iron phosphate is needed if the tip of the tongue is red. The body uses iron phosphate where there is any inflammation. It helps the body to use oxygen to break down disease waste products, and supply oxygen and energy to the muscles. So eat more meat, vegetables, eggs, pumpkin seeds and apricots.

If you put out your tongue and notice it quivering you need magnesium phosphate, which we need to relax both mentally and physically. A craving for sweet foods esp. chocolate is a sign that magnesium is low, however these very foods deplete magnesium more. Instead relax and eat lots of green leafy vegetables and almonds.

By drinking plenty of water you will make all these minerals more available to the body. Water is the vehicle that moves the minerals we need through the cell walls so they can be used by the body. Water is the transport too for all the waste products to leave the cell and be removed from the body.

During a consultation I look at the tongue to help me assess how the body is working as a whole. The mineral deficiencies indicated on the tongue are more relevant if the individual iridology reading; nails and symptoms also indicate them.
