Mental Health And Naturopathy

Are you looking for someone who can understand and help you with your your mental health problems?

Jaine Kirtley has a special interest in mental health, she has helped hundreds of people who suffer from some form of mental illness.

Mental illness probably occurs as frequently as physical illness. One in five people in New Zealand are diagnosed with mental illness. Yet people can be slow to seek help as they often feel that they are to blame for not being able to cope with life.

Naturopaths look on mental illness in the same sort of way that they view physical illness; that is is a sign of fundamental imbalances in the body, and that the causes of those imbalances should be addressed.

As naturopaths always consider all aspects of health, during a consultation it is often found that a physical complaint can be caused by a mental health problem and vice versa that a mental health complaint has a physical cause.

For example a person may complain of digestive upsets which would be considered to be physical, but the underlying cause may be a mental health problem such as anxiety which interferes with digestion. In this cause the naturopath would look at support for the nervous system as well as easing the burden on the digestive system. If on the other hand another person complains of feeling anxious (a mental illness) the naturopath may discover that the person had difficulty digesting food which resulted in a poor absorption of nutrients, the lack of certain nutrients can cause anxiety, in this case the underlying cause would be physical. In both examples both the physical and mental aspects of health need support from naturopathic treatment.
